Vietnam Travel Blog
I have been traveling around in South East Asia for 6 months, visiting a total of 5 countries. It has to be said that Vietnam wasn`t my favourite destination of the 5. The english speaking abilities of the locals are pretty bad, making communication very hard. The country caters more to Chinese tourist than Western ones.
What Is There To Do in Saigon?
In fact it is no longer called Saigon. The official name is now Ho Chi Minh City, and it has been so since 1976. However in everyday speech, among the Vietnamese, the city is still refered to as Saigon.
The city is one of, if not the biggest, city in Vietnam. Saigon is very busy, and walking around and city exploring can be quite the challenge as road crossings is both time consuming and dangerous. The city`s attractions are very much focused around the Vietnam War.
The backpacker area, sometimes refered to as tourist central is a narrow street of around 1,5 km. Here you will find bars, clubs, coffeeshops and 7-11 en-masse.
Vietnam War Memorobilia
During the aftermath of the Vietnam war the Saigon government fell when the liberation forces broke through the wall with tanks. In this blog episode I am visiting the war museum and the independence palace.
Atrocities that are hard to fathom was conducted during the war years by the US. Spraying of lethal toxins and killing of civilians were widespread. The Americans have made themselves guilty of horrible war crimes.
The war ended in 1975, that is the same year Saigon fell and became Ho Chi Minh City.
Top Rooftop Restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City
What is the best restaurant in Saigon, or HCMC ? Many people will say Shri Restaurant & Lounge. I am going to Shri to enjoy their rooftop, high service level and tasty food.
The food served at Shri is rather expensive, and clearly belongs in the high end dining category. That being said the value is still good. I ordered the norwegian salmon and I was satisfied. The price for salmon: 590 000 VND
The rooftop lounge & restaurant also features impressive cocktails. Several that are unique to Shri only. 1 cocktail was around 190 000 VND.
City Tour and Prices
How cheap is Vietnam really?
Fake Ray Ban Sunglasses: 9,5 USD
English breakfast: 5,8 USD
GoPro Hero 5 Camera: 380 USD
Sushi lunch: 8 USD
1 hr body massage: 6 USD
Dinner with red wine: 6 USD
Around 2 hours outside of Ho Chi Minh City the Cu Chi Tunnels are found. The tunnels were used by the Vietnamese during the war years to hide from the Americans. Today it`s a tourist attraction where you can among other things, go inside the tunnels. Truly an adventure, but be careful so you don`t get stuck inside them, because they are tiny.
What is most impressive is possibly how long these tunnels are. They go thousands of miles underground.
There is also a shooting range, souvenir store and various artifacts and items to see.
Further on you will see traps. Traps that the Vietnamese cleverly used to slow down or completely trap American forces.
